The
SR50A is Campbell
Scientific's new generation acoustic distance sensor that measures the elapsed
time between emission and return of an ultrasonic pulse. This measurement can be
used to determine snow or water depth. An air temperature measurement is
required to correct for variations of the speed of sound in air. The GMON3 measures and reports the snow water equivalent (SWE) by measuring the absorption of natural ground gamma radiation through the snow cover. These natural ground gamma emissions are dependant on the mass of water between the source (the ground) and the radiation detector. The measurement area of the GMON is 50-100 square meters and is an excellent replacement sensor for the traditional snow pillow. The sensor is powered using 12VDC and can be easily interfaced to a datalogger with wireless communications allowing real-time transmission of SWE values from remote sites. |

Based on an opto-electronic distance sensor emitting visible eye-safe laser light, the sensors allow probing distances up to 50 ft to detect the surface level. Unlike snow depth sensors using ultrasonic methods, the laser distance measuring technique is independent of temperature changes. Signal strength analysis allows discrimination between snow and other surfaces, signal filtering suppresses interfering precipitation events. |
